What is it?
5D represents a quantum leap forward from today's leading directional drilling software packages. Angus Jamieson developed the original Compass software in the early 1990's and since then Tech21 have pioneered a number of well planning techniques. Involvement in the Drilling Visualisation Research Consortium (DVRC) with the BP Centre for Visualisation at Colorado University produced excellent research results in 3D visualisation to optimise drilling planning, surveying and anti-colission. As a consequence of this the concept of 5D was conceived, using visual interactive graphics underpinned with robust well planning techniques. Whereas conventional well planning software has a very sequential approach to planning and anti-collision, 5D can perform these functions simultaneously, allowing the impact of changes to the well path to be seen immediately.5D is designed for use on many levels.
- Experienced well planners can use it to design wells through complex geological targets.
- Field personnel can check the progress of the well bore; entering surveys and comparing them, both graphically and numerically, to the well plan they have been given by the well planner.
- Experienced field personnel can use 5D to alter well plans, correcting for errors in the drilled well path to recover back to the plan in a manner that does not increase well path complexity.
5D includes the following functionality
- A disciplined database
- 3D visualisation of well plans
- Interactive well planning
- Interactive anti-collision analysis
- Survey processing
- Plotting and reporting
