PC Oilplan

What is It?

Overview

PC Oilplan is a Windows-based software package developed to greatly speed up the decision making process in oil field layout planning. By coupling computer optimisation with user interaction, it provides a comprehensive planning tool for field development engineers.
Main features:

  • The design and cost of an entire field concept. The number of platforms and wells used is unlimited.
  • Input and full integration of existing platforms and wells into the interactive analysis.
  • Monte-Carlo analysis allows optimisation of the number of platforms per field, the platform locations and the number of wells per platform.
  • Continuous display of field design, field, platform and well costs, and individual well parameters.
  • Warnings displayed if well parameters exceed user-defined tolerances.
  • Fully configurable cost model accounting for inclined, curved and straight well sections and allowance for multiple platform installation types.
  • Platform slot geometry and top-hole design parameters can vary for each platform.
  • Top-hole collision avoidance optimisation allows planned well paths to take account of existing well locations.
  • Manipulation of platform positions, platform to well assignments and slot to well allocations via an easy to use graphical interface.
  • Multiple targets for each well allowing the design of slant, horizontal and more complex well paths.
Planning of main wells, sidetracks and multilaterals.
  • Input of surfaces to represent seabed, topography or geological horizons. Surfaces can be used to control drill floor height when moving platforms.
  • Visual interactive 2D field views and 3D sub-platform views.
  • Compatible with Microsoft Excel for input and output of data and output of results.
  • 2D and 3D graphical output compatible with word processing and DTP packages for the production of reports and presentations.
  • Operates on a PC under the Windows 98, NT, 2000, ME or XP operating systems.

The main purpose of PC Oilplan is to optimise the number, position and well allocation of platforms, and the position of processing plants. This optimisation process is achieved using proprietary algorithms and significant effort has been made to ensure that well paths from platform to target are realistic and follow techniques used by drilling engineers.
Although the optimisation and planning process can be completely automatic, an interactive facility allows manual editing of results. Platforms can be moved to avoid known hazards, wells can be transferred from one platform to another and well paths can be changed by moving the targets making up a particular well path. The final report contains a list of platforms and allocated wells with a detailed cost breakdown for each well group and for the field as a whole.
